If you have never opted for midwifery care at a birth center before and don’t personally know someone who has, it might make it a little harder to know what to look for and you may wonder if birth centers are safe.
There are several reasons why giving birth at a birth center might be preferable for most moms with low-risk pregnancies! From being in a home-like environment to getting more freedom of choice, the birth center has it all.
So before you make your decision, here are some things you should know!
Are Birth Centers Safe?
Yes! A five-year study by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Reimbursement called “The Strong Start for Mothers and Newborns Initiative” found that women cared for in midwife-led birth centers had drastically improved outcomes compared to control groups who delivered in conventional hospital settings.
Some of the comparable outcomes include cesarean section rates for the mother (17.5% vs. 29%), preterm birth rates (6.3% vs. 8.5%), and low birth baby weight rates (5.9% vs. 7.4%).
Multiple studies show that care in a freestanding birth center (midwifery-led) is one of the best ways to improve maternal outcomes and decrease maternal morbidity and mortality rates in the United States.
